I’m Dr Nick Ketchum. The thing is, with Spasticity, there are specialists who can help you.
A physiatrist is a doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
We’re trying to help patients do more things on their own.
It’s honestly a team sport where you have the physical therapist, occupational therapist, the physician, the patient, and their family.
And I like to say that my role on that team is the quarterback of the team, because I have to know the ins and the outs of what the therapists are doing, what the patients are doing.
And I also get to be a cheerleader on that team to be able to help motivate the patient and family along to participate as much as they can in their Spasticity treatment.
Each patient has a different set of goals and things they want to improve upon.
I saw this lady, she had had a stroke, and she was somebody who was an avid hiker, then developed Spasticity, and had a lot of stiffness in her leg.
When she came in the room for the first assessment, the first thing I did was watch how she walked into the room.
When I talked about how we might be able to reduce her stiffness, she actually had a lot of hope.
She was really excited about the prospect that we could maybe help her stiffness.
Treatment of Spasticity is not a one-and-done sort of treatment.
It’s something that needs to be managed over time.
I’ve had some patients who I’ve treated their Spasticity.
And for whatever reason, they stop treatment, for three, four, five months at a time.
And oftentimes these patients come back and say, you know, I let the Spasticity be untreated and now I realize what the BOTOX® was actually doing to help reduce my stiffness.
We treated her Spasticity with BOTOX®.
Now we weren’t able to completely make her go back to how things were before the stroke, but she’s been able to see some progress and to really get past some of that stiffness that was bothering her.
It’s never too late to talk about what can be done for your Spasticity.
