My name is Amy, and I live in Wabash, Indiana. I’m a high school special education teacher. My husband is a fireman/paramedic. I have two boys. We live on a small farm. All of us help out on the farm, but I’m right out there with them.
When I was 25 years old, my world was definitely turned upside down. I was eight months pregnant when I had a cerebral hemorrhage, or a stroke. And I’ve been dealing with Spasticity ever since. My hemorrhage stopped on its own, so they didn’t have to do surgery. But they did do emergency C-section to get the baby out. And luckily, he was okay.
After my stroke, I did the inpatient therapy, I did the outpatient therapy. My arm, for the most part, it’s kind of in this position. I can move my arm up, I can move it different directions. The elbow is where it gets tight.
When your arm’s really tight, and then you’re using your good arm to calm it down, to stretch it out…It’s hard for me to hold on to my boys’ hands or do my work or whatever I’m trying to do at that time because I have to pause to relieve the tightness in my arm.
After I had my stroke, I was determined to do what I wanted to do and live my life the way I wanted to live it. Even though I was dealing with the Spasticity in my arm. I just needed to reduce the Spasticity somehow.
The occupational therapist I went to, he’s the one that suggested the BOTOX®. I started investigating on my own, on the internet, just doing some searches, see what I could find. My biggest concern was, what side effects would this have?
On Screen Text: Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of treatment.
When I came to see my doctor for the first time, he explained why they use it and how it works. My doctor explained to me that there’d be multiple injections throughout my arm. He did an ultrasound while he was doing it, so that I could actually see, like, where it was going in.
On Screen Text: Your doctor will determine which muscles need to be injected and at what dose based on your Spasticity.
I get my BOTOX® injections about every 12 weeks. I like going back and getting them every time. BOTOX® has been a great choice for me to reduce the stiffness and tightness in my arm.
If I was talking to anybody that has Spasticity, I would definitely encourage them to see a Spasticity specialist about using BOTOX®.
It’s important to get treated for your Spasticity as soon as you can. And so you need to get a plan started right away. BOTOX® actually did what I needed it to do, and it helped me out. The thing is, BOTOX® has made a difference for me.
